THE PIN: Luke is the quintessential hero figure from the well-known “Hero’s Journey” motif that George Lucas wove into his saga. For him, this journey - the journey from farmboy to Jedi Knight - takes place under the shadow of Darth Vader, with the constant presence of the man who was his father representing not only a galactic threat, but an existential one. Ultimately it is his compassion for that man that defeats this lingering threat of darkness and completes his transformation into a Jedi.
With that in mind, Luke’s window was designed so that the shadow of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader looms over him, representing not only the tension of whether or not Luke will be absorbed into darkness, but hinting at the ember of good - of Skywalker - inside Vader’s shell, an ember that Luke’s compassion rekindles into redemptive flame.
The rising suns of Tatooine dispel the shadow like a cloud, alluding to the two Sons of Suns who together halt the Empire’s spreading darkness. Luke’s flowers are the daffodil, symbolizing truth and forgiveness.
THE SERIES: A triptych is a piece of art that is divided into three, fairly common among old stained glass installations. The goal with this series is to create enough pins of beloved SW characters for people to build their own triptych in a custom frame resembling a stone wall we hope to eventually fund. For now, these 5" pin-on-pins will have the character opaque in the foreground while the window behind will have stained glass effects.
