THE PIN: Framing the sides of Qui-gon’s window are Darth Maul’s lightsabers, as in Western religious art, martyrs are typically pictured with the instrument of their death.

His flower is sakura (cherry blossoms). Sakura are unique because they are at their peak - their most beautiful - in their death, and with this death, herald spring, the coming of new life and beginnings. Here we have used the blowing blossoms to evoke the rising flames that consume Qui-gon after death (and echo the similarly consuming flames in Vader’s window)…and yet they also signify a beginning. Not just of new life for Qui-gon as he discovers how to persist in the Force, but for all Jedi who would learn this feat of immortality from him. In this way, Qui-gon’s death introduces new life.

Following the trail of blowing sakura - the journey from death to life - are the orbs that represent how Qui-gon initially manifested before he obtained the full presence of a Force ghost. These frame two halos: the one behind his head (an image reserved in religious iconography for saints), and the one containing the final scene from Return of the Jedi, where Anakin, Obi-wan, and Yoda are all able to persist beyond death because of Qui-gon and his training. In this way, his spirit has in one form or another overseen Anakin to the point of his final redemption. Because you’ll notice…these two larger halos in fact form the twin suns of Tatooine, where he would meet the child that he believed with his final breath would change everything.

THE TRIPTYCH WINDOWS SERIES: A triptych is a piece of art that is divided into three, fairly common among old stained glass installations. The goal with this series is to create enough pins of beloved SW characters for people to build their own triptych in our custom frame. Checkout our frame highlight for more details and sneak peeks!
